UN M49 · Countries and areas

World countries and areas

This directory lists all 248 countries or areas in the United Nations Statistics Division M49 snapshot, organized by the five M49 geographic regions. Each entry displays its ISO alpha-2 identifier and M49 numeric code so readers can distinguish similarly named places and trace the geography to the published statistical standard.

Select a name in the country index to jump to its regional entry. The regional lists preserve the M49 region assigned by the source; Antarctica is shown separately because M49 does not assign it to a region.

ISO alpha-2 is the two-letter identifier in the M49 table; the three-digit value is its M49 code. These identifiers describe statistical geography, not a claim about kracut operations, service availability, or a local office.

M49 region not assigned

Geographic coverage and publication policy

This is a global reference directory, not 248 local landing pages. It does not claim city, municipality, county, state, province, or other subnational coverage. Only region, state, and local pages backed by official data and distinct, reviewed content are eligible for indexation. No thin country, municipality, or doorway pages are created from this list.

Official source: United Nations Statistics Division, Standard country or area codes for statistical use (M49), overview table. The ISO alpha-2 codes, M49 codes, and regional assignments here are a static snapshot; the site does not fetch the source while building. View the official M49 overview.

The UN SALB catalogue listed geospatial datasets for 40 of its 197 country profiles on 24 September 2026. Links are shown only for those profiles. A dataset listing does not establish that every state, municipality, or other administrative unit has been verified; an absent link does not mean that the country has no national source. UN SALB.

M49 is the United Nations statistical geography standard. A country or area can appear in the table without being a sovereign state. The identifiers and regions should be interpreted as statistical reference data.
